# how to design an action people actually complete

> Fast, specific, emotional, action-first and collective. One action per moment, three or more ways to help, and always at least one email to a named target.

Clicks are cheap. Completions are what land in a senator's inbox. The gap between the two is design: how fast, how clear and how obviously worth it your action feels in the first five seconds.

Here are the five qualities every high-completion action shares, how to structure yours, and the traps to dodge.

## the five qualities of an action people finish

### 1. fast and easy

Think seconds, not minutes. Tell people upfront that the heavy lifting is done: the email is written, the script is ready, the comment is drafted. On chilli, every email, comment, review and call script is personalised for each supporter by chilli, so all they do is check it and send.

**Say it:** "Takes 30 seconds. We wrote it, you send it."

### 2. clear, with a specific plan and outcome

"Take action for the oceans" is a vibe. "Email the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries to stop krill expansion before the CCAMLR meeting" is a plan. People want to know exactly what happens when they tap. Your title does most of this work; [the CTA formula: how to write an action title people can't ignore](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/cta-formula.md) shows you how.

### 3. emotionally aligned with the moment

If the news is about a specific forest, the action is about that forest. Not "climate change". Not "nature". Relevance is what makes people feel the action is the obvious next step after the post they just watched.

### 4. action first, money later

Lead with something to do. A donation ask before anyone's done anything reads as "pay me to care". Once donations are on for your account, the "fund" button can live on your action page and profile too. Let supporters see the work first.

### 5. collective

Show that this is a crowd, not a lonely gesture. Talk about "us" and "we". Point at the counter. Big volumes of small, coordinated actions are what make decision-makers blink.

> **key insight**
>
> Every action should answer three questions in five seconds: what's happening, what do you want me to do, and does it work? If a stranger can't answer them from your action page, rewrite it.

## how to structure your action

On chilli, one **action** holds several **ways to help**. Here's the structure we recommend:

- **one action per moment.** Don't split one fight into five actions. Concentrate the energy.
- **three or more ways to help.** Different people prefer different ways to act, and supporters who finish one often do the next.
- **always at least one email** to a named target. It's the most flexible pressure tool you have.
- **a range of effort.** One 10-second task (a survey or a comment), one core task (the email), one that hits harder (a call).
- **the most important one first.** Pin it, or drag it to the top.

### an example, built from a real win

Here's roughly how EarthlyEducation's Big Bend action worked:

| way to help | type | why it's there |
|---|---|---|
| email House appropriators to pause the funding | email | goes after the money |
| email Homeland Security, Natural Resources and National Parks committee leaders | email | forces public oversight |
| call Congress | phone call | harder to ignore than an inbox |

Emails made it visible at scale. Calls made it hard to ignore. 2K emails and 65 calls later, CBP paused construction inside the park.

## scale it up when the fight is big

For long fights, keep adding ways to help to the same action, or open new actions for new targets. Caroline Gleich's Stratos campaign ran 38 targeted actions across 8 pressure points (legislators, water authorities, insurers, investors, media) in five weeks. When one front slowed, the next one was already live. More on choosing fronts in [pressure points: how to pick the right target for your campaign](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/pressure-points-pick-your-target.md).

## what to avoid

> **avoid this**
>
> - **Too many options at once.** Five actions for one moment splits your audience five ways. One action, several ways to help.
> - **Money first.** Leading with a donation ask before people have done anything. Act first, fund later.
> - **Disconnected asks.** An action about general "sustainability" after a post about a specific oil spill. Relevance is everything.
> - **Vague targets.** "Tell the government." Which one? Which person? Name them.
> - **Walls of text.** Your "why it matters" should be read in under a minute. Link out for the deep dive.

## the pre-publish checklist

Before you hit publish, check that:

- the title contains a verb, a named target and a specific ask
- the intro explains what's happening in one line
- you have at least three ways to help, including one email
- every message is short, polite, firm and has one ask
- the image makes someone stop scrolling
- the whole thing makes sense to someone who's never heard of the issue

## your next move

Now pick the right mix of tools. Here's every type of way to help, and when to use each: [ways to help, explained: every type of action on chilli](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/ways-to-help-explained.md).

## keep going

- [ways to help, explained: every type of action on chilli](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/ways-to-help-explained.md): Six types: email, social comment, Google Maps, phone call, survey and external link. Email is your workhorse, calls hit hardest, comments and reviews go public, surveys warm people up.
- [the CTA formula: how to write an action title people can't ignore](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/cta-formula.md): Action verb + named target + specific ask + urgency signal. If your title doesn't hit at least three of the four, rewrite it.
- [pressure points: how to pick the right target for your campaign](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/pressure-points-pick-your-target.md): Every problem has people who can fix it and people who fund, insure or cover it. Name them, pick the pressure angle each one feels, and hit them where they already listen.
- [how to create your first action on chilli, step by step](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/create-your-first-action.md): Tap + (or create on a computer), tell the story (image, title, intro, why it matters), add at least one way to help, and publish. Fifteen minutes, tops, and your supporters get notified.

## along the path

- previous guide: [pick the moment: when to ask your followers to act](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/pick-the-moment.md): People act when they already feel something. Tie every ask to a live moment (a vote, a scandal, your new video, a creator collab) and it stops feeling like spam.
