# the three urgency signals that get people to act now

> People act when there's a reason to do it today. Give them one: the word "now", a real deadline, or proof that thousands already did it.

"Someday" is where good intentions go to die. Your followers care, but caring doesn't send the email. A reason to do it right now does. Here are the three urgency signals that show up again and again in the best-performing actions on chilli, and how to use them without sounding like a countdown timer at a mattress sale.

## quick context: what you're adding urgency to

On chilli, you publish an **action**: a page with your story and a short list of **ways to help** (send an email, make a call, post a comment…). The action title and your social captions are where urgency lives. If you haven't built one yet, start with [how to create your first action on chilli, step by step](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/create-your-first-action.md).

## signal 1: "now"

The single most-used word in top-performing action titles. It's short, it's a verb's best friend, and it turns a statement into an instruction.

| before | after |
|---|---|
| Save our forest | Tell the minister: vote NO on the logging bill now |
| EACOP financing | Stop financing EACOP now: email the World Bank |

The first one is a made-up rewrite. The second one is a real action title, and it pulled in 427 completions.

## signal 2: a real deadline

A date creates scarcity. "Vote on March 15" gives people a reason to act today instead of "when I have a minute".

- tie it to a real event: a vote, a hearing, a consultation closing, a shareholder meeting.
- put the date in the title or the first line of the intro.
- repeat it in your stories as the day gets closer. The Instagram countdown sticker does this for you.

Real deadlines come from real moments. [pick the moment: when to ask your followers to act](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/pick-the-moment.md) shows how to find them.

## signal 3: a completion counter

People follow momentum. Nobody wants to be first on the dance floor, but everyone wants to join a party that's already going.

chilli counts for you, automatically:

- on the action page: **"4,200 supporters already took action, join us!"**
- on each way to help: **"312 people did this"**, or **"be among the first to do this"** when it's brand new.

Screenshot those numbers and post them. A counter in your story is social proof and a reminder in one frame. More on turning supporters into recruiters in [make it shareable: turn your supporters into recruiters](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/make-it-shareable.md).

> **key insight**
>
> Every action needs at least one urgency signal. The best ones stack two or three: "Tell the Senate to vote NO by Friday. 3,000 of us already did."

## put them together

**action title**

```text
[Verb] [named target]: [specific ask] now
```

**caption with all three signals**

```text
The vote is on [date]. That's [x] days.
[Number] of us already emailed [target]. Let's double it before they sit down to vote.
Take action now: link in bio. 30 seconds, pre-written, done.
```

**story frame on deadline day**

```text
TODAY is the vote. 🔥
[Number] supporters already took action. If you haven't yet, this is the moment.
[link sticker]
```

The full title formula (verb, named target, specific ask, urgency signal) is in [the CTA formula: how to write an action title people can't ignore](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/cta-formula.md).

## urgency, not panic

There's a line between urgency and doom, and it matters. Urgency says "here's the window, here's what we can do in it". Doom says "it's too late, feel bad". The first gets clicks. The second gets unfollows.

> **avoid this**
>
> - fake deadlines. People notice, and they stop believing your real ones.
> - guilt-tripping ("if you don't act, you're part of the problem")
> - ALL CAPS on every line, every day
> - burying the date in paragraph three

> **pro tip**
>
> When the deadline passes, don't go quiet. Post an update on the action page with what happened and what's next. That's what makes people show up for the next deadline. See [close the loop: show your supporters their action mattered](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/close-the-loop-with-updates.md).

## when the window is short, speed wins

EarthlyEducation had days, not weeks, to stop construction inside Big Bend National Park. Their supporters sent 2K emails and made 65 calls to Congress. Six days after the campaign went live on chilli, border authorities paused construction inside the park.

## your next move

Open your live action and read the title out loud. No "now", no date, no number? Rewrite it with at least one. Then post today's counter as a story with a link sticker. Next up: [make it shareable: turn your supporters into recruiters](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/make-it-shareable.md).

## keep going

- [the CTA formula: how to write an action title people can't ignore](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/cta-formula.md): Action verb + named target + specific ask + urgency signal. If your title doesn't hit at least three of the four, rewrite it.
- [pick the moment: when to ask your followers to act](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/pick-the-moment.md): People act when they already feel something. Tie every ask to a live moment (a vote, a scandal, your new video, a creator collab) and it stops feeling like spam.
- [share your action: captions, stories and reels that get people moving](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/share-your-action.md): You don't need a new audience. You need a shorter bridge between the post your followers already watch and the action they can take in 30 seconds.
- [make it shareable: turn your supporters into recruiters](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/make-it-shareable.md): Your reach stops at your followers. Your supporters' reach doesn't. Give them something worth sharing and a reason to do it, and every action brings in the next wave.

## along the path

- previous guide: [your link in bio is prime real estate. use it for action](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/link-in-bio-for-activists.md): Your bio link is the one thing on Instagram that never scrolls away. Point it at an action, keep it fresh, and give it a button people want to tap.
- next guide: [make it shareable: turn your supporters into recruiters](https://creators.chilli.club/resources/make-it-shareable.md): Your reach stops at your followers. Your supporters' reach doesn't. Give them something worth sharing and a reason to do it, and every action brings in the next wave.
