what's at stake

Antarctic krill are tiny creatures, and yet the whole ecosystem of the Southern Ocean depends on them, from whales, penguins, seals, seabirds, and fish. The problem is industrial fishing companies are pulling krill out of Antarctica to make supplements, pet food, and aquaculture feed.

  • Krill are the foundation of the Antarctic food web.

  • Whales, penguins, seals, seabirds, and fish depend on them.

  • Aker QRILL, linked to Aker BioMarine, is the world's largest krill harvester.

  • Krill fishing is increasingly concentrated in key feeding grounds for whales, seals, and penguins.

  • WWF and ASOC have called for an immediate moratorium and formally objected to the MSC certification of Antarctic krill fishing.

the mission

The krill fight started with one campaign led by Celina Chien. Then other creators saw the issue, understood the scale of it, and wanted to activate their own communities too.

chilli helped turn that momentum into coordinated pressure. Instead of sending every audience into the same generic petition, creators pushed the krill industry from different sides: governments, retailers, embassies, certifiers, investors, and public opinion.

  • Maximise reach: coordinate creators and communities so separate audiences became shared pressure.
  • Hit the market players: pressure retailers and supplement brands to stop selling krill products.
  • Hit the rule-makers: push CCAMLR, Norway, the EU, embassies, and political actors to stop the expansion of Antarctic krill fishing.
  • Challenge the "sustainable" label: call out the gap between MSC certification and what conservation groups were warning about on the water.

The goal was simple. If companies wanted to keep selling krill as clean, healthy, and sustainable, they should have to answer for what that extraction does to Antarctica.

how creators used chilli

chilli helped creators turn one issue into a campaign architecture: 21 CTAs across 7 pressure fronts, built to move more than 1,000 active supporters.

  • 8 creators involved, with a combined global reach of more than 5 million people
  • 3,224 actions taken
  • 7 pressure fronts opened: governments, retailers, certifiers, insurers, investors, embassies, and public opinion

The global creator mix mattered. Celina Chien, Sea Shepherd, Camille Étienne, Seaspiracy, Romane Lebot, Captain Paul Watson Foundation, Nicolas Pascal, and Emily Wilson all carried pieces of the krill fight on chilli.

Together, they pushed embassies, Norway, the EU, CCAMLR, retailers, manufacturers, Greenpeace Norway, Whole Foods, Swisse, Woolworths, and Norges Bank. Different audiences, same aim: make Antarctic krill extraction harder to defend, harder to certify, and harder to sell.

the impact

Krill went from a niche ocean issue to a mainstream controversy, with chilli helping creators build pressure as major retailers and manufacturers started moving away from krill products.

The pressure did not land in a vacuum. Holland & Barrett committed to fully exit the krill category by April 2026, becoming the first major retailer to end all krill product sales. Sea Shepherd said the decision followed evidence and discussions about industrial supertrawlers operating among whale pods.

Soon after, Germany's dm-drogerie markt and UK supplement manufacturer Time Health also committed to leave krill products behind.

  • Holland & Barrett committed to stop sourcing all krill products across its range by April 2026.
  • dm-drogerie markt, Europe's largest drugstore chain, committed to cease all krill product sales.
  • Time Health became the first supplement manufacturer to sign the Antarctic Krill Pledge and phase out krill-derived products.
  • ASOC and WWF formally objected to MSC recertification of Antarctic krill fishing.
  • The Guardian covered Aker QRILL as the world's largest krill harvester at the centre of a fight over sustainability labels.

What changed is the shape of the pressure. It is no longer scattered. Creators on chilli helped turn Antarctic krill into a shared campaign, with different voices pushing the same industry from different sides.

That is the real lesson here. Krill extraction is easier to defend when it sounds distant, technical, and invisible. This campaign made it public, specific, and much harder for retailers, certifiers, and decision-makers to wave through.
