pick the moment: when to ask your followers to act
People act when they already feel something. Tie every ask to a live moment (a vote, a scandal, your new video, a creator collab) and it stops feeling like spam.
A petition from last month is homework. An email to the senator voting tomorrow is a mission. Same cause, same audience, wildly different results. The difference is the moment.
The moment gives you permission to ask. Here are the four kinds, how to use each, and real creators who nailed them.
why timing beats everything
Your audience acts when they already feel something: angry, shocked, moved, hopeful. Catch them in that window and the ask feels like relief ("finally, something I can do"). Miss it and the same ask feels like a chore.
1. external moments
Breaking news, votes, court rulings, a company's earnings call, a crisis unfolding in real time. The energy is already there. Your job is to point it somewhere.
How to use it: anchor the ask to a real deadline, then translate the complexity into 1–3 simple actions. Nobody needs to understand the whole bill to email their representative about one clause.

Built the story on newly surfaced facts from a congressional inspection.
2. creator moments
Your own content drop, a personal story, an investigation, an anniversary, a milestone. You own these, which means you can plan them.
How to use it: use the milestone to bring people back, then add urgency so a celebration becomes an action.
Released newly captured footage exposing the conditions of captive orcas, with an action ready to go.
Turned its 5th anniversary into a time-boxed donation drive. Monthly donations grew 300%.
Paired lived credibility with an unresolved mystery. The tension made people want to respond, and the action gave them a way.
3. community moments
Ongoing conversations, shared goals and, best of all, collaborations with other creators.
How to use it: team up with aligned creators around one action. You combine reach, repeat the message across feeds and show your audience they're part of something bigger.

Tapped into each other's audiences while pushing one shared goal.

4. chilli moments
Sometimes we spotlight a fight across the app: a featured campaign, a themed week, a collective push. If your cause lines up, jump in. You get extra visibility and your audience joins a bigger wave.

chilli picked up a creator's original post and turned it into a featured campaign: a creator moment that became a platform-wide one.
is this a moment? a 10-second test
Ask yourself:
- Is there a clock? A vote, a hearing, a deadline, a launch date.
- Is there a name? A person or organisation who can say yes or no.
- Are people already talking about it? In your comments, your DMs, the news.
- Can I explain the ask in one sentence?
Three yeses? Create the action today. One or zero? Save it for your "why it matters" story and wait for the moment.
speed matters
EarthlyEducation saw the Big Bend border construction moving fast and launched while the story was hot. Six days later, CBP paused construction in the park. A week later, that same action would have been a history lesson.
your next move
You've got the moment. Now build an action people actually finish: how to design an action people actually complete.
