the three urgency signals that get people to act now
People act when there's a reason to do it today. Give them one: the word "now", a real deadline, or proof that thousands already did it.
"Someday" is where good intentions go to die. Your followers care, but caring doesn't send the email. A reason to do it right now does. Here are the three urgency signals that show up again and again in the best-performing actions on chilli, and how to use them without sounding like a countdown timer at a mattress sale.
quick context: what you're adding urgency to
On chilli, you publish an action: a page with your story and a short list of ways to help (send an email, make a call, post a comment…). The action title and your social captions are where urgency lives. If you haven't built one yet, start with how to create your first action on chilli, step by step.
signal 1: "now"
The single most-used word in top-performing action titles. It's short, it's a verb's best friend, and it turns a statement into an instruction.
| before | after |
|---|---|
| Save our forest | Tell the minister: vote NO on the logging bill now |
| EACOP financing | Stop financing EACOP now: email the World Bank |
The first one is a made-up rewrite. The second one is a real action title, and it pulled in 427 completions.
signal 2: a real deadline
A date creates scarcity. "Vote on March 15" gives people a reason to act today instead of "when I have a minute".
- tie it to a real event: a vote, a hearing, a consultation closing, a shareholder meeting.
- put the date in the title or the first line of the intro.
- repeat it in your stories as the day gets closer. The Instagram countdown sticker does this for you.
Real deadlines come from real moments. pick the moment: when to ask your followers to act shows how to find them.
signal 3: a completion counter
People follow momentum. Nobody wants to be first on the dance floor, but everyone wants to join a party that's already going.
chilli counts for you, automatically:
- on the action page: "4,200 supporters already took action, join us!"
- on each way to help: "312 people did this", or "be among the first to do this" when it's brand new.
Screenshot those numbers and post them. A counter in your story is social proof and a reminder in one frame. More on turning supporters into recruiters in make it shareable: turn your supporters into recruiters.
put them together
[Verb] [named target]: [specific ask] now
The vote is on [date]. That's [x] days.
[Number] of us already emailed [target]. Let's double it before they sit down to vote.
Take action now: link in bio. 30 seconds, pre-written, done.
TODAY is the vote. 🔥
[Number] supporters already took action. If you haven't yet, this is the moment.

The full title formula (verb, named target, specific ask, urgency signal) is in the CTA formula: how to write an action title people can't ignore.
urgency, not panic
There's a line between urgency and doom, and it matters. Urgency says "here's the window, here's what we can do in it". Doom says "it's too late, feel bad". The first gets clicks. The second gets unfollows.
when the window is short, speed wins
EarthlyEducation had days, not weeks, to stop construction inside Big Bend National Park. Their supporters sent 2K emails and made 65 calls to Congress. Six days after the campaign went live on chilli, border authorities paused construction inside the park.

your next move
Open your live action and read the title out loud. No "now", no date, no number? Rewrite it with at least one. Then post today's counter as a story with a link sticker. Next up: make it shareable: turn your supporters into recruiters.
